As you begin reading this, you may think (or have thought) —-“hummmmmm, we’ve already read this a few times…WHY again?…Maybe today is a good day just to zip through.” HOWEVER……. this is the END of the book of Jeremiah. This is the LAST time we will read about the prophecy of the fall of Jerusalem from his vantage point. We will also read about prophecy about the fall of Babylon….the WORLD POWER at the time.
CHAPTER 51 — You may want to underline a few things in this chapter. LOOK at the detail Jeremiah gives as he prophesies about the FALL OF BABYLON…..even WHO will take them down.
In the midst of such saddness .. God reminded them/ and us that Jeremiah 51:5 ”For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the Lord of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.” THAT is HOPE amid the destruction!!
In verses 7-8, Jeremiah warned Jerusalem that when Babylon fell, they needed to LEAVE there once released!! Verse 22 discusses the Medes….the Medes are the people who will DESTROY Babylon in 539 B.C.
Here is a map that may help you actually visualize where things were happening. Compare this map to things that are happening today in these SAME locations:
CHAPTER 52 — The details of the fall of Jerusalem from another vantage point. This is the LAST TIME we will read about the fall of Jerusalem from “outside” of captivity. Jeremiah is prophesying about what will happen, had already started but Jeremiah was a free man. He had been freed by Babylon and given a choice of whether he would remain in Babylon and live a comfortable life OR whether he would return to Jerusalem with his people who hated him and tired to kill him. Provisions in Jerusalem were over abundant because Nebuchadnezzar had taken all the wealthy, talented people and left the poor to fend for themselves. Jeremiah knew his life would not be easy not would it be filled with the comforts of Babylon. However, Jeremiah KNEW he needed to still prophesy to the last of his people in Jerusalem. Keep in mind Jeremiah tells of the captivity strictly from a prophetic view point since he was never in captivity. We will soon begin to read from Ezekiel and Daniel and we will read from a different perspective. They were in captivity. They were on the “inside”….. IN captivity and IN exile in Babylon.
Verse 6 actually marks the day of destruction of Jerusalem: “By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat. 7 Then the city wall was broken through, and the whole army fled. They left the city at night through the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden, though the Babylonians were surrounding the city. They fled toward the Arabah, 8 but the Babylonian army pursued King Zedekiah and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his soldiers were separated from him and scattered, 9 and he was captured.”
THIS is the day on the calendar in OUR modern times, in the synagogues, that the Book of Lamentations is read by the Hebrews. A significant day!!
Verse 13 — the day had come when the Temple that David had planned in great detail….that Solomon had built in all its glory….that King Josiah restored….is destroyed by Babylon…..JUST had it had been prophesied!!!
Verse 16…very important. HERE is the HOPE…. The REMNANT people (Nebuchadnezzar left behind the poorest people,) the ones that Jeremiah chose to stay with are left behind. And finally Verse 27 the Babylonians executed King Zedekiah and all the officials and Jerusalem and all of Judah was now completely in captivity….in exile….in Babylon!!
We have finished yet another Book of the Bible in our journey!!! Celebrate this special moment of faithfulness. God is sharing things with you I am confident you have never noticed before…pray over them…allow them to sink in….and ASK HIM what HE would like you to learn from what you have read.
Sharing HIS love,

CHAPTER 49 — The destruction of the Ammonites. As I mentioned yesterday, the Ammonites were descendants of Ammon, one of the sons of Lot through incest with one of his daughters. Like the Moabites, the Ammonites never cared for the Israelites/Judeans and their evil actions progressed through the years. God brings judgement upon them.
Edom is also mentioned in this chapter. Do you recall Edom? I know it will come back to you. Isaac and Rebekah had two twin sons — Esau and Jacob. Esau was actually the oldest but for a bowl of lentil stew Esau (also known as Edom because he like to eat) gave away his birthright to Jacob. Later, Jacob with the encouragement of his mother pretended to be Esau so Jacob/Israel would give him the double blessing. For awhile Esau threatened to kill Jacob and although that phase passed the descendant of Esau/Edom never got along with the descendants of Jacob.
Also in Obadiah, the Scripture referred to Edom as an eagle”s next with the city built on the side of a red mountain. Esau/Edom was referred to as ruddy/reddish complexion!!
We also have a message concerning Damascus which was and still is in SYRIA!! In the time of Jeremiah Damascus was defeated by both Assyria and Babylon. Damascus has existed for hundreds of years and look at ALL that is happening there TODAY!!!!
This chapter ends with Elam. It was attacked by Nebuchadnezzar in 597 B.C. Later Elam became the center of the Persian empire (Daniel 8:2). God tells us that HE would set HIS throne in Elam and destroy her king and officials. THEN…. God give a word of HOPE for Elam….. “Yet I will RESTORE the fortunes of Elam in days to come.”
CHAPTER 50 — A message about Babylon — there is SOOOOO much in this chapter!!
Babylon will be captured!! Of course I am sure the people living in that time were wondering HOW and WHEN because they had become sooooo powerful. BUT we KNOW they were destroyed. Did you know that Babylon is being rebuilt TODAY??? Google it and see what you can find.
Bel was the chief god the Babylonians worshiped in the Tower of Babel.
Marduk was a chief deity of Babylonians in the time of Nebuchadnezzar. It was one of their idols and scholars felt this was probably the planet Mars which like Saturn was regarded by ancients as the author of blood shed and slaughter.
Verse 5 — Israel and Judah together would come to The Lord in tears seeking HIM. …They would come and bind themselves to The Lord “IN AN EVERLASTING COVENANT THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.” Ummmmmmm….JESUS!!!
Babylon would be punished and completely destroyed. Israel would be brought back to their land and become a nation again (which did happen officially for all the world to see in May, 1948 …HUGE prophecy fulfilled!!)
Other words which caught my attention were:
verse 34: “Yet their REDEEMER is strong!”
verse 36″ “A sword against her FALSE PROPHETS…”
verses 45-46 — The invader of Babylon would be Cyrus from Medo-Persia, who attacked them by surprise and overthrew the prideful, arrogant, idol worshiping nation. NO earthly power, no matter how great can last forever (to be honest that is a scary thought for me when I think of all that is going on today….but I have to keep my focus on our CREATOR and WHO REALLY is in CONTROL…AMEN!!)
As you read these two chapters today (actually the whole book) keep your focus on the REMNANT being spared!!!!
There is SOOOO much in these two chapters, I am sure many things stood out to you today. I’d love to hear what things stood out to you!!

Up to this point we have been reading about Jeremiah warning Judah to TURN BACK to the Lord and then the fall of Jerusalem. Most of the last chapters of Jeremiah are regarding the judgment of other nations. Ironically, at this point all these other nations think they are completely free from judgment but like Habakkuk said:
“Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.” (Hab 3:16)
As heart breaking as the fall of Jerusalem and Judah are to read we KNOW The Lord spent a HUGE portion of the OT saving HIS people from the enemy, providing for them, encouraging them, and warning them. Many people don’t like to read the OT because they say it is too complicated to understand or it is way to negative. However, I believe the NT makes sooooooo much more sense with the knowledge of the OT. God wants us aware that there will come a day of judgement again, but MOST important is that HE wants us to know HIS character. Even in 2 out of the three chapters we read today, there are words of HOPE and restoration. And living on this side of the cross we have the greatest HOPE anyone could every have and that is our forever loving relationship with Jesus Christ.
The next 7 chapters are written about God’s judgment on evil people. People who persecuted His people, plundered them, and taught them their pagan and idol worshipping ways. This leaves us knowing He is our Defender, our Conqueror. He is a God of Justice. No one escapes His Perfect Judgment. And on this side of the cross, as Jesus as our Lord and Savior, when HE returns we will be seen not by our sin and imperfections but through the blood of Jesus that purifies us. NOW that is such good news!!! HOW much does God love us?? HE sent and Jesus came, died for us, and rose again on the 3rd day that we may have such love, forgiveness, and the PROMISE of eternity with HIM.
CHAPTER 46 —- Jeremiah prophesied about the destruction of Egypt. This takes us back to Egypt’s fall at the battle of Carchemish in 605 B.C. and then the invasion by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in the middle of Jeremiah’s life. Did you notice verses 27-28? God told Jacob/Judah not to fear or be dismayed, they will again have peace. He promised not to completely destroy them (the REMNANT) although HE would discipline them for their choices. EVEN in the midst of ALL the destruction…God was still telling HIS people of HIS love!!
CHAPTER 47 — This is a foretelling of the destruction of the Philistines who will also fall to the Babylonians. This prophecy is noted in many books including Isaiah, Amos, Ezekiel, Zephaniah and Zechariah. The Philistines were the Hebrews enemy since the Hebrews became a people. My first thought when I hear Philistines is always with David and Goliath. However, I also think about God telling Moses to leave Egypt. We were told in Exodus 13: 17-18: “17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.” Interesting —-eh??
Chapter 48 — The destruction of Moab. Do you recall who the Moabites were the descendants of? I bet you do!! Lot had two daughters. His daughters got Lot drunk, each had sex with him, and each had a son from the incest (if you want to read more it is in Genesis 19.) One daughter’s son was Moab. His other daughter’s son was Ammon who we will read about tomorrow. The Moabites were never fond of the Israelites and in the era we are currently reading about —- they helped Babylon take Judah. Did they think the Lord would let that slide? And AGAIN…in the last verse of this chapter, God PROMISED to RESTORE the fortunes of MOAB in the days to come!! God’s compassion reaches to all creations…EVEN to HIS enemies!!!
The last verse made me think A LOT about the times in which we are reading as well as about the times we are in today. God is a loving God. He loves us and wants ALL of us to know Him, praise HIm, read His Word, love HIM, and so much more. Yet, as much as He loves us… HE will not be mocked.. and for “every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” How can God’s Word rest (within us & not be used FOR Him) when the end times have been set in motion?
Did this get you to thinking? Above ALL things KNOW that Jesus will make all things right upon HIS return which is why it is so important that EVERY has the chance to CHOOSE HIM. Reading HIS Word is OH so important so we KNOW it and are not easily taken in by false prophets. As I started today’s entry, I made the comment that these other countries felt they were somehow NOT included in God’s judgement. However, not knowing the TRUTH will not be an excuse at the final hour.
Once again… I am so grateful…beyond words….to KNOW that Jesus loves me and you even more than I can comprehend.
God bless you all!!! PLEASE write on the blog or send me an email if you have questions or concerns about anything I have said.
Sharing HIS incredible love,
