ISAIAH OVERVIEW

Isaiah Overview

Tomorrow we add another book to our reading. I am sooooo excited because the book of Isaiah ROCKS and tells us about OUR ROCK!!! Ummmmm Ummmmmm good!!

Isaiah is one of the Major Prophets. Remember the Prophets are divided into Major and Minor……based only on the size/length of the books.

The Major Prophets teach us that God has a plan for history and that through a coming Messiah HE will eventually subdue all HIS enemies and bring Peace to Earth.

Prophets were not liked because they brought words of consequence due to sin and lifestyle. But their words were from God; the Prophets were just the messengers.

“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account.” (Deuteronomy 18:18)

Isaiah means “Jehovah Saves”, the main theme of the book of Isaiah is Salvation. The book of Isaiah is a book of and for ALL times. Isaiah spoke of the moral conditions of the time and looked far into the future including the times of TODAY. During the book of Isaiah, Rome was being built (not in a day), Sparta and Athens were developing, and Egypt was a rising nation. Look at a map and you will see Assyria, as we know, it is at its strongest and most aggressive state, striving for World Power. In the South was Egypt, another nation aimed at a world empire. Right in the middle if that land is Israel and Judah, inhibiting much of the trade route.

The book of Isaiah is a masterpiece in itself. A bible inside the Bible. This book has 66 chapters (the Bible has 66 Books). The book is clearly divided into twos sections (just like the bible). The first section is 39 Chapters and the second 27 chapters (guess what? Just like the Bible OT vs NT!! The first section will begin with the peoples’ sin, and ends with prophecy of the coming Messiah, the righteous King. (just like the Old Testament). The second section opens in Chapter 40 with the very words that John the Baptist will say in the beginning of the New Testament (YES…I am SERIOUS!) The book of Isaiah will end with visions of Heaven and a new earth, just as we will read in Revelations. This book is AWESOME, but then again so is OUR ONE TRUE GOD!!

Isaiah spoke of the judgement that must fall on Judah because they REFUSED to obey The Lord. Israel had already fallen as a Nation!! Judah thought that in keeping up with all OUTWARD observances in their religious service ALL would be ok with them and the Lord(many people and churches still believe this way!!) Isaiah advised them to repent and seek the forgiveness of THE ONE TRUE GOD. The ENTIRE book of Isaiah reveals the ultimate triumph of God’s plan through the Lord Jesus. This book will talk about the failure of the people (people who KNEW THE ONE TRUE GOD, people who had MEMORIZED the Words of God, yet they REFUSED to be totally, 100% devoted to HIM!!) And it reveals the wonderful wonderful prophesy (which we have seen fulfilled in the NT) of the coming Messiah!! Hallelujah!!!
Circle the Day August 19th on your Calendar. It will be the day we read Isaiah 53, the jewel inside this treasure box. As you read the book of Isaiah, I hope you will spend a little extra time looking up the cross references to what you are reading. Isaiah is the MOST quoted prophet in the New Testament. There are so many EXACT FULFILLED PROPHESIES that the book has been rebuked as a Prophecy book and taught by skeptics that it was written “after” events happened not before. And just so you know where believers in the ONE TRUE GOD STAND…… GOD IS ALL KNOWING!!! HE KNOWS THE FUTURE!!! HE knew it when Genesis was written, so why wouldn’t HE know it when Isaiah was written? As we have seen….JESUS is ON EVERY page of the Bible…..NOT just in the NT…..God CHOSE HIS people as INSTRUMENTS to spread HIS Word and HIS TRUTH….God ALWAYS meant for EVERYone to have access to HIM…..JEW and GENTILE!!! God DESIRES that ALL….ALL….ALL of us have a personal relationship with HIM through Jesus Christ and Isaiah clearly opens that door WIDE. Romans 10:9 — “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
