MORE people…not to worry…many are repeats, but just in case you need a little refresher like I did…. here is a list of people and who they are. Hope it helps stimulate those brain cells <<smile>>>
CHAPTER 9 —
Elisha (good) Prophet succeeded Elijah
Jehu becomes King of Israel, yes I said Israel (good but not 100% faithful)- the reason I point out King of Israel was because he was the son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah (who was also good)
Ahab and Jezebel (Israel King and his wife… both bad to the bone .. “most evil king ever” and most evil woman who is also mentioned in Revelations as bad)
Joram- Ahab’s son. King of Israel (bad!)
Hazael King of Aram (Aram also known as Syria) (he was bad). He was going to be king but didn’t feel like waiting so he killed the last one (8:15)
Ahaziah-King of Judah (bad)
OK…. I have to admit the first paragraph made me laugh. Elisha told one of the prophets in the company of prophets which was like a school for/of prophets to go anoint Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, king of Israel THEN RUN!!!! I had to read this twice and read it out loud to my husband and we both had a good belly laugh (the Lord knows what we each need and we needed the laughter.) SO WHY did Elisha tell the prophet to anoint Jehu and RUN? I’m so glad you asked!! Elijah back in 1 Kings 19:16 prophesied that MANY people would be killed when Jehu became King.
Look at what the prophet sent by Elisha told Jehu in verses 6-10: “Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. YOU ARE TO DESTROY THE HOUSE OF AHAB YOUR MASTER, AND I WILL AVENGE THE BLOOD OF MY SERVANTS THE PROPHETS AND THE BLOOD OF ALL THE LORD’S SERVANTS BY JEZEBEL. The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah. As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and RAN.”
Jehu began his mission IMMEDIATELY. Did you notice verse 20? These men recognized Jehu’s driving — “he drives like a madman.” Another Scripture that made me laugh!! I certainly know a few people that drive like a madman and I can tell when their cars are in my neighborhood ….just from the sound….oh yea… that’s so and so flooring it in the 25 mph zone…..and no they are not all guys!! <<<smile>>>
CHAPTER 10 — The killing of Ahab’s family continues (this all may be slightly familiar because we read it last week in Chronicles) Anyway this was all prophesied in 1 Kings 21.
Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy!”
”I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD. ‘I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.’ “And also concerning Jezebel the LORD says: ‘Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.’
“Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country.”
Jehu was a tad zealous , eh?? Jehu reigned 28 years, he was an officer of Ahab’s bodyguards and was anointed prophet to be king and eliminate the house of Ahab and Baalism. Although Jehu was doing what the Lord commanded him, his zeal took it MUCH further than the Lord intended. We will read about this when we get into
Hosea 1:4-5. I was impressed at his desire to DO what The Lord told him to do. He had great love for The Lord as he remained focused on his mission. I mean he was so focused, he just wanted to kill everyone associated with Ahab!!! Maybe this is where the name of the movie and/or book came from for “The Killing Fields?” ALSO… a great example today of taking things too far is when people go overboard in their protest against abortion clinics. Don’t stop reading here… read the rest please… In the US we are greatly blessed to have freedom of speech and to be able to peaceably demonstrate against the abortion clinics (and many other things as well). HOWEVER, the people who profess to be Christian (maybe they are maybe they are not…only God knows that answer), yet take a stand for the unborn by KILLING the doctors and some times the nurses in the abortion clinics is WRONG. Trying to lovingly and peaceably express feelings that abortion based on God’s principles is wrong is totally acceptable. However, killing the people in the clinics or harming women entering the clinics is NOT God’s way.
We always have to keep our enthusiasm for the Lord in check with the Bible. For example the bible tells us murder is wrong, BUT Jehu was commanded by the LORD to KILL Ahab’s family because they were soooooooo evil and had absolutely NO desire to change their ways. Jehu killed Joram, the king of Israel, Jezebel, Ahaziah, the king of Judah (Ahab’s son in law) Ahabs’ 70 sons, the brother of Ahaziahm, all the friends, the Baal priests, destroyed Baal temples and pillars but right after the “Latrine comment” which again cracked me up, The Lord has something to say:
The LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” Unfortunately Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with ALL his heart. He did NOT turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he (Jeroboam) had caused Israel to commit.
Remember when Jeroboam (J=Jerk) had the golden calves built in Bethel and Dan to keep all of the Kingdom of Israel, the Northern Kingdom, from leaving the North to make their tri-annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem (which was in the Southern Kingdom of Judah) to go tot he Temple to praise The Lord, make sacrifices and offering to HIM in HIS presence at the Temple???? Jeroboam was AFRAID he would lose the people who supported him if they departed and went to the Temple of The Lord in Jerusalem. WELLLLLL…. Jehu NEVER tore down the gold calves….which were no different than worshiping the Baals. Jehu could have let the golden calves remain for political reasons or because he was so busy worrying about every one else’s sin that he never stopped to search his own wrong doing. Helllooooo…ever sit at church and say “I hope _____ is listening today.” (OUCH….come on…we all have!)
CHAPTER 11. Huge event happened here. We need to keep our eye on the ball. ALL of what we read leads up to Jesus. So where is Jesus in this story? Joash, the hidden boy. The line of David IS in the middle of a blood bath. ALL of the line of Judah were about to be killed by their grandmother (Athaliah) of all people. Joash was taken as a baby with his nurse and hidden IN THE TEMPLE for 7 years and then crowned king. The priest and his wife…hid the baby of the line of Judah leaving the line of David alive and the Covenant remaining that the Messiah will come from the House of David … the line of Judah…. as promised!!!! YES… God keeps ALL HIS promises!!! By looking at the past…the past in the Bible….and our own past….we can be greatly blessed and encouraged as we see all the Promises God has kept, all the Prophesies that have come true, and take the time to count all the ways God has provided for us in our pasts…..WOW….WHAT encouragement!! God PROMISES NEVER to leave us or FORSAKE us, HIS children!!! Did you see Jesus in the baby Joash being hidden so as not to be killed?????
I don’t know if anyone reading this is into archeological finds, but I was listening to a story on CBN yesterday 7/23/13 and heard the most amazing story ….real life…today story about an archeologist who has been uncovering the city of David, his house, the “royal engraved” containers of grain for the royal family of David, and so much more. Her name is Eilat Mazar. Although this aired yesterday I found something posted on CBN’s site from June that resembled what I saw, in case you have time and are interested, take a peak….you can read and/or watch the video.
We don’t need “proof” that our God lives….because we KNOW HE does from HIS Word and the all the ways WE have changed once we gave our lives to HIM. However, isn’t it wonderful that God is allowing these things to PROVE the history written in the bible to come forth???
In case you get into the archeological finds here is something else that is interesting — Jehu and this history was found on the Assyrian Kings Obelisk, which depicted Jehu on it and the Lime that was used was dated to this exact Biblical time!!!
OK…. I just HAVE to PRAISE THE LORD from whom all blessings flow…right here …. right NOW…. before all you who are reading!!!
God loves us deeply. HE cares about EACH thing in our lives. HE knows what is on our hearts. OUR Abba Father is reaching down right now to hold you, comfort you, tell you HE loves you in just the way you need to know. Listen….”be still and KNOW that I am God..”
Sharing HIS love,
