Psalm 65: This Psalm was written by David and reminds of God’s abundant provisions. We can be thankful for ALL HIS blessings. This Psalm was speaking directly to Israel “back in the day.” Verse 1 states: “to YOU our vows will be fulfilled.” In OT times vows were taken very serious. If you would like to read more about these vows you can refer to Deuteronomy 23:21-13. A person was never required to make a vow, but once they made it, they were obligated to keep it, even when a parent made it for their child such as Samson, Hannah with Samuel, and Mary with Jesus. The vows being fulfilled in this verse is the PROMISE to praise God for all His answers to prayer. Israel at this time was a model for what God intended and HE therefore is blessing them just as HE promised.

Verse 3 caught my attention: “When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgression.” HE STILL FORGIVES!! NOBODY is beyond redemption. Redemption is for all believers, regardless of how “bad” our sin is. God does not have a weight for sin, to HIM ANY sin separates us from HIM, regardless of what it is. So it does not matter what your sin is…murder, porn, prostitution, disobedience, rebellion, lying, cheating, stealing, adultery, drugs, alcohol, abuse, …. ANY sin…. HE WILL forgive us as believers. Our part is to ask for forgiveness with a pure heart, and desiring to change (repent….do a total turn from the sin….let it go…desiring and working toward never returning to the sin. God is a God of HIS promises and HE WANTS a relationship with us. This relationship to be at its best is done by confessing our sins…continually. God promises us that He forgives us our sins and no longer remembers them… in HIS forgiveness the confessions of sin are as far as the east is from the west!!! As if we needed any other reminder, this Psalm does focus on the greatness of God’s abundant generosity through HIS majestic displays in nature….”O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties, above the fruit and grain…God shed HIS grace on thee…from sea to shining sea!!” In the last verse it says: “Nature does indeed SHOUT for joy and sing.”

Psalm 66 was written by an anonymous author after a great victory to remind all of us of the power of prayer. God answers prayers and we are encouraged to pray, paise, and worship. If that was just “ok” I suggest reading it again. That is the Psalm of all Psalms for me!! Verses that stood out to me were: “HOW awesome are YOUR deeds!” “Great is YOUR power.” “ALL the earth bows down to YOU.” “They sing praises TO YOU….they sing praises OF YOUR name.”

God tested the Israelites and HE allows us to be tested/go through trials. Trials refine us like heat refines silver!! They bring new and deeper wisdom; help us discern truth from falsehoods. ABOVE ALL trials help us realize that LIFE is a GIFT from God, not a right to be taken for granted or abused.
Verses 13-15 discuss something we all do…in very challenging times we often try to bargain with God. “Oh God if you will do this one thing for me, then I will do “xyz” for YOU.” Unfortunately, when the trial is over we often forget our vows we promised God IF HE would just get us through whatever our challenge is/was. I’m sure none of you can relate to this, but I have certainly done my share of trying to bargain with God. My attempts at bargaining may make me feel better, as IF I have anything to do with the outcome, but I have learned rather than bargaining … simply to pray, praise, thank, and remember the ways God has worked in my life. This author was determined not only to not forget but to also KEEP his vow. Another good reminder for us….remain true to our words.

Verse 18 states: “If I had cherished sin in my heart, The Lord would not have listened.” Sin is fun and can be very deceiving because it usually feels good for a season. If we cherish the sin we are living….we are deceiving ourselves…we are in denial..and we grow more and more separated from God. I found the author’s words of “cherished sin” very interesting.

And verse 20 …THANK YOU GOD for loving me!!

Psalm 67– written by an anonymous author who reminds us that joy comes from spreading the GOOD News. This is a foreshadow of when Jesus gave the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 — Go ye therefore and teach all nations …go, go, go to ALL the ends of the earth!!

Psalm 69 — was also written by David as a cry of distress in a sea of trouble It is one of the most quoted Scriptures in the NT and often applied to JESUS. In reading this you can see some parallels between David’s situation and Jesus and is no doubt a foreshadow of Jesus. David cried out until he was physically exhausted….yet he STILL trusted God to save him!! This is one of the most quoted Psalms through the New Testament. Verse 4 is quoted in John 15:25 because Jesus had many enemies. Verse 7 is seen in John 7:15 because HE was scorned by HIS brothers. Verse 9 mentions “zeal” and Jesus showed great zeal when HE threw the money changers out of the Temple in John 2:14-17. The suffering portrayed in verses 20-21 can be seen in Matthew 27:24, Mark 15:33, Luke 23:36, and John 19:28-30 concerning Jesus. Verses 22-28 are quoted in Romans 11:9-10. Peter applied verse 25 to Judas in Acts 11:20.

Verse 5: “You, God, KNOW my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you.” reminded me that God KNOWS my heart, my thoughts, my intentions. HE KNOWS it ALL so why bother to hide ….just go to HIM, and tell it all…confess if there is a need, act if HE guides me to do so….but mostly don’t carry around my burdens because HE wants me to bring them to HIM so HE can carry them. AHHHHHHHH!!!

This entire Psalm also reminded me that when situations seem hopeless, I must DETERMINE that NO MATTER WHAT — I will continue to pray to HIM!!! Decide NOW to go to HIM regardless of how you feel, what your circumstances are, how desperate things appear. You may only have time to speak A single word to HIM such as help, help me, etc….but HE hears and HE wants us to share with HIM so we can see HE does answer prayers. HE is the ONLY source of true happiness and joy…seek HIM in all your ways.

This is such a beautiful Psalm is and packed with so many things…”Book of Life”…”salvation….protection…Seek God so your hearts may live…”

Psalm 70 — David wrote this an an urgent prayer for help. It is a short Psalm and can even be YOUR prayer when you need help. There is not ONE way to pray and it is such a wonderful thing that God LOVES our originality to simply come before HIM and pray, ask, praise, thank, worship, LISTEN, etc. He doesn’t measure the length of our prayers but the sincerity of our prayers from our hearts is what is so important to HIM. Some people pray in great detail, some with one word…look at the last two Psalms we just read, David wrote them both. One is very short and one is long but they are equal in God’s eyes!! God is not sitting in heaven with a red pen “grading how we prayers.” He simply desires that we PRAY. God values our quick prayers as much as HE does our lengthy ones. That my friends is FREEDOM from a loving Father.

Sharing HIS love,
