  • Hold fast to HIM 10:20-22

Chapter 8—WHY were the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years  (P.S. — it is usually the same reason we spend years of our life wandering today)???  See verse 2-5:

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandsHe humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty yearsKnow then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.    (I beg you to read that twice)

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Mt 4:4)

WHAT will the LORD do if HIS people OBEY HIM (then and now)?  See verses 6-9

Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering himFor the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

How do we get out of our wandering? How do we get  to the Promised Land in our life?  YOU are doing it now…. reading HIS Word, staying in the Bible, memorizing scriptures, and obeying HIS commands that we learn.  We are always in a test, we are to be humbled to change our hearts.  In Deuteronomy,  they are hearing God through Moses.  BUT.. we…. we…  right now have the GIFT of hearing God through the Bible, ANY time we want to, speaking directly to HIM.  Moses was a vessel for God to use.  Our Bible is that vessel.  These words are very much for us and yes… even about us. 🙂

God wants us to KNOW, understand, comprehend, deep down in our heart and soul that it is NOT by or through ANY thing we can do on our own…. Not our looks, our books, our money, our careers, our career titles, our education, our good works, our kindness, our integrity, our honesty, our keeping the law (as if we could) … OR ANY THING ELSE we have, are, or think we have or are that can make us righteous!!  See 9:4-7

After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

To remind us that we don’t deserve the Promised Land,  we can’t earn it, we cannot do anything WITHOUT the Lord to get there…he retells the story of the Golden Calf.  We ALL have a golden Calf in our lives!  LOOK how LONG Moses prayed… I mean the man PRAYED!!  AFTER fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he then had to trek down the mountain because the people are acting unholy and THEN he chose to pray for them for another 40 days and 40 nights while fasting.  IF you did not read this story in Exodus…it is a MUST READ! Exodus 32.

What does the Lord ask of us?? We can read all the Christian books, attend all sorts of Christian conferences so we may learn WHAT GOD ASKS OF US … yet He makes it VERY plain right here in Deuteronomy.  Look at Chapter 10:12-22, read it again.. go ahead.. I’ll wait 🙂   …. Book mark it in your bible…. Go ahead… get some kind of sticky thingie and mark it so you can always turn to it… go ahead… I’ll wait 🙂

I often hear people say…. “but the old testament …. It just does nothing for me…. It is just not where I’m supposed to read.”  I used to be one of those people!!…..Until last year, when the Lord opened my eyes.  IMHO…. I understand the NT sooooooooo much better now that I have a better understanding (still learning and growing… but better) of the OT.  God’s character is totally amazing when you begin to see it detailed in the OT.

I honestly used to be afraid of the God in the OT.  BECAUSE I never could make it through it with any degree of comprehension…….. all I could see was an angry God, full of wrath, expecting these people to do the impossible.  However, after many hours of prayer in 2011 .. when I asked the Lord to bring me closer to HIM.   SUDDENLY… OUT of NO WHERE (seriously) I was lead to a “small” — online — Bible study with a group of people mostly in Nashville, TN.  People I had never heard of before and still have not met face to face and may not until we get to heaven.  God in HIS awesomeness.. lead me there.. so I could learn from someone HE was guiding BY HIS WORD.. who could teach me more about HIM.  Next to my being born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit … THAT online Bible study began to transform what I knew about the Lord.  Suddenly I could see all the “threads” weaving the total picture of the WHOLE Bible.  Not only did God bless me with understanding and a touch of wisdom but HE also gave me new friends… who will forever be part of my heart.  And THAT my friends is just the beginning…. WATCH the story unfold in the Bible!!  STUDY what God says to YOU.  STUDY HIS Word, USE the resources recommended under the blue RESOURCES bar at the top of this blog.  Allow God to write HIS Word upon your hearts….. and when HE writes it there… it NEVER fades!!!

Sharing HIS love,
