HOLY WEEK — Thursday

Click here for today’s reading which is all 3 passages at once

  • Matthew 26:20-30
  • John 13:1-17
  • Matthew 26:36-39

As I read these Scriptures today … I have to tell you… my heart was so taken over by the presence of the Holy Spirit.  I cried at Judas’ actions.  I cried at Peter’s denials.  I cried when Jesus became their servant and washed their feet.  I read in awe as I could see, hear, feel, taste, and smell all that was going on in the upper room.  And, then in Gethsemane … my heart simply broke.  Jesus knew the pain he was about to face.. yet… “not my will but thine…” And he had asked the disciples a simple question… WATCH… but they could not.  This is not just a STORY… this is HISTORY.  If any of you have had a chance to watch the series “The Bible”  this month… it has really brought home to me once again that this book we read is not just another book with a nice guy in it.  IT IS HISTORY!! IT IS THE TRUTH OF OUR SALVATION AND HOW WE WILL SPEND ETERNITY.    What OTHER PROPHET walked this earth, spoke the truth about who HE WAS and ROSE from the DEAD!!!  THERE IS none like HIM!!!  “There is None Like You” by Hillsong

What is the difference between the Passover, The Last Supper, and Good Friday??  NONE …. you read it correctly … NONE!!  The Passover was and is for the Jewish Nation.  The Last Supper was the last PASSOVER Jesus would celebrate with HIS disciples.  It was the last meal HE would eat on this earth.  Good Friday is the same celebration for Christians.  The GOOD NEWS which makes it GOOD Friday is that JESUS was the FINAL SACRIFICE.  HE IS OUR HIGH PRIEST.  HIS BLOOD THAT WILL BE SHED tomorrow during our journey of the Holy Week …. is NOW the blood that covers us, forgives us, and makes us white as snow …. BECAUSE of his death and RESURRECTION!!  So, does it make sense that the Passover and Good Friday are one in the same ….. and why GOOD Friday is called GOOD FRIDAY???  (I know … tomorrow is Friday)… but this evening is when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper, HIS last Passover with HIS disciples, washed their feet, and prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Passover was when the Jewish people sacrificed a perfect spotless Lamb.  The Lamb was a substitute for their death.  It was a feast to celebrate the remembrance of when the Angel of Death came to the Egypt.  The Angel of Death took ALL the FIRST BORN sons of the Egyptians.  The Israelites were PASSED OVER because through Moses, God had instructed ALL of HIS people to spread the blood of an innocent lamb over their doors so the Angel of Death would not take the sons of the Israelites.  DEATH would PASSOVER them SO THAT they could leave a life of bondage and be Free! Now substitute the word Passover for Good Friday and read it again.  They are the same thing.

The Lord set up the original Passover as a Foreshadow  of the FINAL Passover, it has been Fulfilled.  God is so perfect that Good Friday happens on the calendar day of Passover when Jesus dies.  He is the Passover Lamb…on the Cross.

As you read these very familiar scriptures of what we call the Last Supper, the Upper Room Discourse, and Jesus praying in Gethsemane, ASK the HOLY SPIRIT to join you and ask HIM to help you read them now on a whole new level.  Read them  with the fullness of all your heart, WITH the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT.  READ them outloud… READ them with your family… READ them with the AUDIO…. READ them as never before 🙂

Pictures speak 1000 words …. Imagine if you had been there..

The LAST SUPPER … Matthew 26:26-28  “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it,  and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”   Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying “Drink from it, all of you.  THIS is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus WASHING THE DISCIPLES FEET — John 13:8  “… unless I wash you, you have NO part with me.”

In the GARDEN of GETHSEMANE — Matthew 26:36-46  – “Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”  …. verse 38  “Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  Stay here and KEEP WATCH WITH ME.” … verse 39 –“Going a little farther, HE fell with HIS face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible,  may this cup be taken from me.  Yet, not as I will, but as you will.”   Did the disciples stay awake?   How many times did Jesus  pray …. for HIS Father’s will to be done???
