Do you KNOW how much God loves you? God loves YOU so much that He made sure He breathed forth a book that would tell you all about HIM, all about what HE wants for you, all about what pleases HIM, all about what HE wants from you. HE loves you so much that HE sent HIS ONLY begotten son, born of a virgin, was God yet walked this earth as man, was brutally crucified, died on the cross, and then rose from the dead … so that you could be forgiven of all your sin, have abundant life while on this earth, and spend eternity with HIM when our last breath stops here.
Chapter 26 – verses 1-13 tell us ALL the wonderful blessings HE has in store for us ON THIS EARTH… IF…. IF… IF…. We will obey HIM. I know I have said this before and here it comes again, but with EVERY action there is an EQUAL and OPPOSITE REACTION. Or another way to say it is with every CHOICE to OBEY HIM… there is a positive consequence. If WE make no idols before HIM, or set up an image or a sacred stone for ourselves, and do not bow before carved stones, observe HIS Sabbaths, have reverence for HIS sanctuary, follow HIS decrees, and OBEY HIS commands THEN…. THEN… THEN…. LOOK at all the wonderful blessings HE has in store for us.
BUT… (yep.. you KNOW there is always a but in the picture) … BUT if we do NOT listen to HIM and OBEY HIM then there are consequences… negative consequences. LOOK at the consequences for disobedience in verses 14-39!! WHEEE doggies!! The word punish is used several times in these verses. However, the BLB shows that the meaning for punish in Hebrew in verse 18 is “to chasten, discipline, instruct, admonish.” None of these things may be pleasant when we are going through them. However in verse 24, it is a MUCH stronger definition for punish which is “strike, smite, hit, beat, slay, kill.” IMHO the more stubborn and rebellious we are … the strong HIS response becomes.
A few things that stood out me when I looked up the definition of punish (from verse 18), chasten, discipline, instruct, and admonish. Here are a a few things that stood out to me:
- Punish — to impose a penalty on for a fault, offense, or violation
- Chasten — discipline; also: PURIFY; to prune of excess, pretense, or falsity: refine; to cause to be more humble
- Instruct –to teach, train, give knowledge to
- Admonish — to indicate duties or obligations to, to express WARNING especially in a gentle manner.
- Discipline – punishment; instruction; training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character.
If you want to read Hebrews 8-10 your eyes will be opened after reading today’s read. God disciplines us because HE loves us and wants us to be made more into HIS image. The entire book of Hebrews is to encourage believers to continue in the grace of Jesus Christ and for unbelievers to take action. God is a loving parent who cares for us deeply. He WANTS the right things for us and HE knows what these right things are. If you are a parent, I am sure you can relate to the matter of discipline. When you have to discipline your child, you do it because you love them, to protect them, to help them grow, so they can eventually lead a good productive life. Some children respond with little discipline… some test your very being!! And when you have to discipline your child/children … it hurts your heart… it can often grieve you…. And our God is NO different.
In verses 40-46 – God reveals HIS love for REDEMPTION … HE WANTS US to NOT step away from HIM and when we do HE provides a way back… even in the OT!! “BUT… IF THEY WILL CONFESS THEIR SINS and the sins of their ancestors….then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham…. For THEIR sake I will remember my covenant…” GOD WANTS US REDEEMED… HE WANTS us to willingly come back to HIM. However sometimes HE has to get our ATTENTION to get us moving in the right direction.
Chapter 27 – God is speaking ALL about REDEMPTION …buying back!!!
Our next 10 months together can be summed up in today’s read!!
God has told us what He asks, and shown us in His reaction what pleases Him and what does not. God is a God of Love and with Love comes consequences. Chapter 26 should be called a ‘Chapter of Consequences’…. Action/Reaction…. Choices/Consequences.
Proverbs 3:11-12 states: My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
1 Peter 1:14-16 states: As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
For unbelievers, a different type of punishment will ultimately take place after this life. Those who CHOSE NOT to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will be separated from God forever and exist in eternal punishment. Not all will accept HIS gift of salvation. See 1 Timothy 2:4, Ezekial 3:19, John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8-9.
On January 11, 2014 when we read Hebrews 8-10, I am going to ask you to reread THESE chapters and your jaw will drop open when you see that EVERY scripture is fulfilled (Even the ones of them eating their children). So look for the re-read and you will not read any of this as punishment, but as to call to action…. A call to redeemption… a call to make us more in HIS image.
You did it. You made it through Leviticus! Woooo Hooooo. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! 🙂 A great song to worship HIM with is “I Just Want To Be Where You Are” by Don Moen” Let this song bring YOU into HIS presence…. ahhhhhhhhh… so awesome 🙂
