Moses is on a God ordained Spiritual journey. He has been on the mountain top with God receiving the hand written 10 Commandments and the guidelines to help the people know HOW to worship God. He will soon come down from that mountain top after 40 days of being in the arms of God!!!
WE have just completed our 40th day in reading our bible .. .our own Spiritual journey … “leaning on the everlasting arms!!” We have learned SO much and yet we have only begun. Thank you for taking this journey with me but most importantly with God. HE is the ONE for us. HIS Word has all the answers… we might have to have a little help from other believers to have our eyes opened and our hearts of flesh written upon (which is why a solid Bible based church, bible studies, etc are so important). So are you READY to wrap up our 40th day together???
There is a song by Larnelle Harris called: “The Strength of the Lord” that says: “It is not in trying but in trusting, not in running but in resting, not in wondering but in praying that we find the strength of the Lord.”
My prayer for each of us is that through this we gain a new level of TRUST, REST, and PRAYER so we mayeach find the strength of the Lord as we have never known HIM before!! 🙂
Chapter 30 — The Tabernacle was placed in the center of the Camp, which shows us that God wants to be in the center of our life as well. It was only about 15 ft. tall, but when compared to the tents it was a LARGE structure. God wants us to know HIM as the LARGE structure in our lives today… through Jesus, our High Priest, our Mediator to God. Once again God’s attention to detail makes it VERY apparent how strongly He feels about us as well as how VERY import true, pure worship to HIM, of HIM, and for HIM are to HIM. HE wants to spend time with us!! He does call us HIS friend!
Altar of Incense; this was the prayers going up to Heaven. The smoke from this would rise out of the Tabernacle going up to what must have looked like Heaven.
Basin for washing; this was to physically and symbolically represent the cleansing that God required to take place before the priests could begin the sacrifices or enter the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place. Jesus Christ is Who cleanses us to come freely before the Lord.
Anointing Oil – The anointing oil, like the incense was sacred and was so holy that the people were strictly forbidden to copy it for personal use. The oil in and of itself had NO supernatural power, in addition to its function in the ceremony it was also a test in obedience for the Israelites not to duplicate it. The oil was to be poured on the head of the high priest and his descendants and sprinkling the tabernacle and its furnishing to make them as holy and set apart before the Lord.
The REALLY important thing from this chapter IMHO is that God desires a very up close and personal relationship with us… daily…moment by moment. He already knows us, and what we are thinking, so why not just give it all over to HIM? He KNOWS our time schedules. He KNOWS our sin, our hurts, our… everything… and STILL wants us to spend time with Him. He KNOWs we are not perfect which is WHY HE sent HIS son Jesus Christ for us.
Chapter 31…If you recall in Chapter 28:3, God gave WISDOM to “the skilled men in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron.” Now the Lord tells Moses in verses 2-3: “See I have chosen Bezalel son of Url, the son of Hur, of the tribe of JUDAH, and I have filled him with the SPIRIT OF GOD, WITH SKILL, ABILITY AND KNOWLEDGE IN ALL KINDS OF CRAFTS…” in order to build ALL details in the temple. In verses 6-11 tells us about Oholiab’s gifts to further God’s purpose in the building of the temple. These names were who God was speaking of in Chapter 28:3… and He shares their names with US. WHAT an AWESOME reminder that when we are called to do something in the Lord’s name, He will provide ALL we need to accomplish “it.” God has a special purpose for EACH of HIS children in furthering HIS purposes. Not all of us are called to be an Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron …. But GOD has given EACH of us SPECIAL gifts to further HIS Kingdom!! HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD???!!!!!
The Golden Calf
Chapter 32 – OH MY HEAVENS!! Moses, their spiritual leader is called by God to the top of the mountain. He is ON the mountain top with God and God tells him he needs to get DOWN the mountain WITH the (Ten Commandments written BY GOD in stone) because the people have become corrupt. This reminds me of returning to work on a Monday morning after a glorious week of vacation….. Those Mondays are usually “hairy” Mondays… if you know what I mean???!!! Now, remember 40 or so days before this the people THEMSELVES (Chapter 19:16-20:21) saw the storm, felt the earth shake, and heard God give the 10 Commandments verbally.
Moses leaves to meet God on Mt Sinai, and the people state in verse 1: “…we don’t know WHAT has happened to him” so we want gods NOW to go before us. HOLY COW… whoops… did I just say THAT??? I mean they didn’t even have microwaves and they still expected things at a microwave pace. WHAT did they mean “they don’t KNOW WHAT has happened to him???” OK>>> OK>>> let’s take a deep breath and think about our personal lives. How often do we go to church and hear an anointed Word from our Pastors, smile, hug people as we are departing, get in our cars….. and FORGET everything we just heard???? Ummmmmmmmm……. I know I do that. I KNOW what he said!! I heard it!! I took GOOD notes!! I have the BIBLE passages to remind me during the week. And yet….. I seem to get my brain erased as soon as I am out of the church. Sound familiar to anyone else?? So don’t judge those poor folks from 2500+ years ago tooooooo harshly.
Aaron steps up to the plate!! He takes control. He says take off all of your gold earrings and give them to me. HE does NOT bother to ASK God. He is totally swept up in “solving” the problem of the moment (more like a mob of 2-3 MILLION screaming Me-Me people demanding something NOW.) He makes a Golden Calf for them to worship. (OH NO… oh… yesssss he does!!) In verse 4 we see that Aaron “MADE” the calf with his OWN hands by “fashioning it with a tool.” THEN in verse 24 Aaron tells Moses … well they just gave me their jewelry and I threw it into the fire and this calf JUST POPPED OUT!! (Bet you never heard or said anything like that before…. Right???) So.. do you happen to remember when Moses kept telling God that he couldn’t speak and he needed help so God in Chapter 4:14 gave him Aaron, although HIS anger BURNED against Moses?? OH MAN….. talk about being careful for what we ASK!!
Why a Calf? What is the Big deal about this? (I do wonder if this is where the term “holy cow” came from??!!)
The Israelites were imitating false pagan worship they had SEEN in Egypt in the past. God tried to keep the separate but they were still exposed to it, it was “natural to them”, it was a “comfort zone” for them!! The Egyptians had a TON of false gods (if you look at the entry titled the 10 plagues you will see a column on that list that references SOME of the Egyptian gods). PLUS the Israelites are headed to Canaan where they will ALSO worship MORE false gods.
The picture below is of a god named Moleck…. See the head of a bull??? (No bull 🙂 According to www.gotquestions.org this is what I found on Moleck: “Phoenicia was a loosely gathered group of people who inhabited Canaan (modern day Lebanon, Syria, and Israel) between 1550 BC and 300 BC. In addition to sexual rituals, Molech worship included child sacrifice, or “passing children through the fire.” It is believed that giant metal statues were made of a man with a bull’s head, either with a hole in his abdomen or outstretched forearms that made a kind of ramp to a hole in his torso. A fire was lit in or around the statue. Babies were placed in the statue’s arms or in the hole. If a couple sacrificed their first born, they believed that Molech would ensure financial prosperity for the family and future children.”
God tells Moses, I am going to wipe these people out BUT DON”T worry, I will still keep all my promises to you Moses (see verse 10). Moses SEES his people dancing around the calf and in verse 19: “his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites DRINK it.” What does Moses do next? HE PRAYS. And guess what? It made a difference! God relented. However, there would be consequences for their sin (impatience, their insistence on a god that would go before them, their worship of another god before GOD.) God asked those who were for the Lord to come forward, and the Levite Priests stepped forward. They choose GOD over even their own sons and brothers of the Hebrew nations. ( Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”) Then in the last verse God struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made!! OOOUUUUCCCCCHHHHHH!!!! I am every so grateful that we are no longer under the law because NO ONE can keep the LAW. Which is just ONE of the many wonderful things about Jesus!!
I’m telling ya….. “Showtime, HBO, Cinamax, IMAX,” any other MAX has NOTHING on the Bible… it is ALL in here!!!
OK… so are you ready to read day 41??? 🙂
Sharing HIS love,
