Genesis 1-3

GENESIS MEANS ORIGIN, CREATION, AND BEGINNING.

Today’s reading:  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%201-3&version=NIV

Genesis was breathed by God and penned by  Moses.  It is the beginning of what is referred to as the Pentateuch, from the Greek: Penta (meaning five) and Tuech (meaning Book), also known as the Torah, or the Books of Law.

Genesis is divided into 2 sections: Chapter 1-11 Beginnings.

Chapters 12-50 The Patriarchs (the fathers).

In between the two we are going to insert JOB.

As a point of reference I typically use the NIV but will do my best to remember to put which version of the Bible I use when I am quoting from it.  Also know that I am NOT the best with  spelin or gramar 🙂 and depending on my schedule you WILL find errors from time to time although I will try to proofread what I write, so I ask for your forgiveness in advance for imperfections.

We may not know the exact spot of Eden, but we have a very good idea of the area.  When we picture how it used to be, to the area now it is simply a  reminder of the ugliness of  the  decay, destruction, and results of sin.  Here is the general area since God gave us the rivers in Chapter 2.

Did anyone look up the Hebrew meanings of the names?

Genesis is created from 11 documents written separately and them put together to be what we call THE BOOK OF GENESIS.

CHAPTER ONE – gives an OVERVIEW of the Creation and CHAPTER TWO – rewinds the story and gives us more detail.

I have often thought about the Garden of  Eden and never realized just how short lived it really was.  By the end of Chapter 3 Eden is no longer inhabited, but forever protected by cherubim.  God ONLY gave them one “rule” and it was:

2:16 …You are free to eat from ANY tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

WE see man’s attempt to cover his OWN sin in this verse.  Now the next verse is a FORESHADOW of Jesus on the Cross… are you ready for this???  I was so blown away when God opened my eyes to see Jesus from the very first book of the Bible all the way through to the end.  🙂  You can ONLY imagine how my Bible must look… highlighted, colored markers, circles, squares, anything to make things stand out to me that I see.

3:21 The Lord made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

We see God’s Covenant where He substitutes the life, the blood, of an innocent animal to COVER (Atonement means to cover) the sin of Adam and Eve.   Think about it for just a moment.  God set in motion the foreshadow of the Cross right here in Genesis 3!!  IS THAT NOT A MIND BLOWER??!!    Have you ever thought about WHERE the “skins” came from that God covered them with?  Well.. now ya know. 🙂

Are you ready for another eye opener??  Look at the LAST verse in today’s reading.

3:24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[n] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Until last year, I never noticed that there were 2… TWO major trees in the Garden of Eden (I mean there were LOTS of trees, but TWO major important trees).  One tree was the tree of   LIFE  and the other was the tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil (the one they ate from).

When God drove man out of the Garden, WHY did HE  HAVE to guard the tree??  Before eating from the tree of  KNOWLEDGE,  man ate from the tree of life.  They communed and lived with God EVERY second of their life ….. WOW!!!   Now sin has separated man from God, that is what sin does… it separates us from God.   If we were able to eat  from the tree of life then we would never die thus we would never be reunited with God in heaven.  The cherubim blocks the tree SO THAT we will have the blessing of death of this body but not the spirit (if we choose God) and one day we will  receive a place in Heaven with HIM.

Will we see the tree of life again in the Bible?   ABSOLUTELY, just flip to the last chapter of Revelation :) that’s right.   We eat from the Tree of Life in Heaven giving us ETERNAL life again with the Lord.

Ummmmm Ummmmm good….. reading of the Word!!  Here is an assignment for you….. PROVE (FROM THE SCRIPTURES) THAT THE TRINITY WAS AT THE CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE.  HOW DO WE KNOW GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT WERE ALL PRESENT?????

PLEASE SHARE YOU THOUGHTS, HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT, AND COMMENTS ABOUT OUT READING TODAY.

  1. Joseph — Thanks for joining us… I hope you will continue on your journey with us in the WORD 🙂

Ashley — I second ALL of your comments…. great insight!! I think it is so interesting to think about the fact that as soon as Adam and Eve sinned, God KNEW it. He asked them about it and of course there was the “blame game” plus they had tried to do their own covering up with as you said the poor fig leaves. (I’ve tried something like that myself). And, as you pointed out God made them clothing.

Why and how did God make them clothing?? God killed an innocent animal (possibly a lamb as you pointed out but the scripture doesn’t say specifically). He killed an innocent animal with life blood running through it to ATONE (cover up their sins). Atonement is the Bible’s central message showing that God has provided a way for EACH of us to come back to HIM. So the message of atonement, a foreshadow of Jesus Christ, BEGINS right here in the Garden of Eden. An animal was killed, blood was shed, so that Adam and Eve could wear the skin of this innocent animal to cover their sins.

I also like your wording on God’s “denial” for us to eat of the tree of life on this earth and HIS “mercy” based on “lest we eat and live forever in such miserable condition”. That is a great insight!! Thanks for pointing that out. I’m going to be circling that in my Bible 🙂

I do believe Jesus Christ and HIS WORD are our tree of life, so we may stand righteously before God because NOTHING we could ever do (except ask Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior) will get us into a right relationship with God, live life abundantly on this earth, and spend eternity living with HIM. And it is ONLY through HIM that we will be able to stand before the Father totally innocent of our sin because the Father will see us with the innocent blood of Jesus covering all our sins (just as the innocent animal skin covered Adam and Eve).

Based on Revelation 22:14, I also believe once the “New Jerusalem” comes all believers in Jesus Christ will be eating from the tree of life once again that was the original tree of life in the Garden of Eden before the fall. The tree of life that the cherubim are still guarding to this day by God’s orders.

Isn’t it wonderful to have these discussions on God’s Word???

THANK you so much for sharing Ashley!!

I encourage all to share 🙂

  2. Hi Gina! This is Ashley from step study! I love reading your entries! Another thing I think is important to point out here is the skins were from the first death after the fall. Not only that but the covering of Adam (the figgs) was so insufficiant God Himself clothed them with skin (perhaps it was lamb skin…?) As God clothed us with the righteousness of Christ.

Now about the trinity… I see the trinity spoken of in this verse : 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

I think “Us” is refering to the Trinity.

I also think the decision for us to no longer be able to eat from the tree of life was a denial based on the mercy of God. “Lest we eat and live forever in such a miserable condition.”

Instead we can die to self in the spiritual world and we become born again in the righteousness of Christ. Then we are premitted to eat of the tree of life (Christ). What do you think?

  3. quite interesting, still stick around

  4. i’ve heard this before but i’ts interesting nonetheless.
